I'll be getting my first patrol within the next few months and I am trying to figure out which way to go for suspension and tires. The safest option would obviously be 2" and 33's, but I put these questions to the GQ blokes out there running a 3" lift and 35's.

Do you get much unwanted police attention? I am mostly curious about the highway police as I live in an area which we have the privilege (not..) of having these guys around on public holidays/long weekends etc. Also being on P plates they seem to target us automatically. There is also the option of trying not to travel too much around these times.

Being older cars, is it worth getting full comp insurance? If you think it is, how do different companies go about insuring cars that are not 'roadworthy' (oversized tires and lift) I know most will gladly take your money but if it ever comes to a big payout will they actually stick by the agreement?

Cheers.

Do you actually need 35" tyres?? I would stick a front locker in stick to 33" and far far less dramas :)

Agree with klappers. I have 3in 35s and front locked. Kinda wish I hadn't wasted money on 35s and stuck to 2in 33s and front locker. Still would have gone everywhere the big boys did. Whack a winch on the front and you'll be unstoppable anyway.

I do enjoy the 35s and love the look but i do get attention. Been running around with no front rego plate for a year and only been pulled over for warnings twice.

Next truck will be 2in and 33s front locked with winch to avoid the risk.

I'll Take a different slant on things...

I have 2 inch lift and 33's at the moment and often find I am getting hung up it the ruts (vic ruts will do that to you though in some spots no matter what tyres you have) so I would suggest if you don't mind changing tires when you want to go wheeling just slap the 35's on...
In victoria 37's are the new 35's so you need all the diff clearance you can get for the ruts

if you want to stay legal just get a winch and learn line picking a bit better
For me 35's would be nice but being at school still the $$$ isn't there for them

I have recently purchased a swb gq Maverick which had suspension and body lift as well as 35's. I brought it back to Qld and decided to mod plate it all (still in the process) but have dropped it a little, replaced the 35's with 33's and have a Lokka on the way for the front. You notice the difference even taking the 35's off, but with the plates, will be 100% legal with no issues. I was out buying bits and pieces in it today, and the boys in blue gave it a long look, but the traffic island between us possibly stopped them from doing much more!!!

Pees will get you attention of the po-po no matter what you drive. It’s kind of an initiation, or rite of passage. When on Pees be prepared to get hassled by the po-po. Hang out with groups of your mates at service stations late at night, or car parks, back roads etc.. expect to be hassled even more. Been there, done that. It will pass when you’re not needing to display plates on your car.
Remember the cops can only get you for something that you’re doing wrong, or is wrong (unsafe) with your car under the law. If your car, be it 4X4 or high performance, is substantially modified you should get it signed off by an engineer.
If it’s a **** box commie with chopped springs, a straight through ‘xhaust with a cannon and chev badge and gets pulled by the Hwy Patrol and sent over the pits/EPA and yellow/blue stickered (NSW) then you deserve it. Because it shouldn’t be on the road. You can keep modifications within the ‘safe’ levels of the law, not attract unwanted attention and still drive something daily that will crush all terrain.

I have a 4 inch and 35's and on p plates, never had any troubles also my missus dad is highway patrol and hes never said anything. Theres heaps off people getting around with 6-7 inch lifts so im sure they will get pulled up before a 3 inch with 35's.

Nobody else has touched on it so I'll answer the insurance question as I'm going through this right now, with a 3' lift and 33 or 35 tyres your stuffed. I don't know what state your in but pretty much all states are the same now except bloody QLD as usual. Anything over a 2" lift ( this includes suspension and tyres) requires some paperwork and checking at least by your local registry office (that is no engineering certificate req.) They may ask for a wheel alignment check to make sure it's factory spec. etc. It's usually pretty easy up to 4" (except QLD 3") but it must be signed off to make it legal before an insurance company will pay, remember it is their job to weasel out of paying by any means necessary.
Yes, get it fully insured, if someone hits you and you don't have full insurance and the vehicle is written off they will offer you a piddly amount for it and if you want what it's worth you will have to take the insurance co. to court, good luck with that... I would suggest a specialist 4wd insurer, search here or Google.
Also it might pay to note that the usual -22 offset rims (15x8 )that is on just about every GQ you see are actually illegal as they give a 64mm track width increase, the max allowable is 50mm... also a potential insurance issue..

I got pulledover in a RBT on sunday, 33's, 3" lift, bent bullbar and laminated colour photocopy of number plate as the original is still in the mud at Janowen, but a clean truck . Behind me was a P plater with 35's, 4"-5" lift, and dirty. They went over him like a dose of salts not sure what they stung him with in the end. Don't draw attention to yourself is my motto. Cop just had a laugh at my front number plate and didn't say a word. Sad thing was, people are still drink driving.

Been driving around with 3" 35's since August'ish last year and still on green P's.

Most people have seen how beaten my GU is. And I've only been told off out my tyres being too wide due to the lack of flares and badly pushed in 1/4 panels.

Apart from that I've been very fortunate and hope it stays that way.

Even with a fully engineered vehicle your insurance company can still refuse to cover you comprehensively. Leaving you to go to a specialist car place like Shannon's or Just Car. Which means $$$.
But sometimes there are other ways. For example I informed my. Previous insurance company of the 4" lift and tyres and they cancelled my insurance. Rang another insurance co. who are underwritten by the same mob as my last insurance co and stated suspension modifications as "heavy duty suspension for towing" and "larger off road wheels" which are listed on policy and covered for at least 1000$ less than Shannon's or Just Car quoted me.

That's with Virgin Car Insurance.

Hi,

That is well and fine, but when an assessor looks at it and sees bigger springs not heavy duty you have violated the Duty of disclosure clause, and they can cancell the policy and refund the premium. Worst case scenario I know but it can happen.

Hi,

It is easier to buy a vehicle that will do what you want standard. When you start to change things, there is a flow on effect. I like the feeling that what I drive complies with all the rules, and if I am in a Fatal and they go over with a fine tooth comb there is nothing that they will find. It also means no issues with insurance.
