Is the X-Rox bar legal?

Have been told that the X-Rox bar is illegal to run on a road driven vehicle because it does not cover the front of your tyres meaning if you hit a pedestrian they will go straight under your wheels.

My personal opinion is if you get hit by a patrol its not going to make much of a difference and this info was given to me through my cousin who was looking at getting one and was talking to a vehicle inspector about them.

By the way this is in WA, don't know if that makes a difference or not.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Cheers,
Tim

Seeing as how the X-Rox bar went through the ADR testing to be certified as air bag compliant I would assume (yes I know what they say about assumptions :) ) it would be road legal. That said I know that in some pedestrian heavy areas any sort of bulbar is prohibited. Maybe that's what your cousin was thinking of.

Yeah that was my thought as well, surely it would not have been given ADR compliance if it was illegal to use for safety reasons.

Thanks for that pgower

Damo71 has got one on his Patrol (GU) over here in QLD where the boys in blue are prety anil about four wheel drives it's been on for ages and never had a problem but that's not saying that it is legal. But I thought ADR Approved bullbars where legal that's why they have to be tested to the standard??? being airbag compatible as well. Your best bet will to be ask your transport depertment if the bullbar meets ARD then is it legal?

i thort they failed the ADR tests coz the center tube section where you would mount your spotties leans forward not backward so if you hit someone the theory is they will be pushed under the car instead of up and over the bonnet but with a 6" lift and 35's i dont think it would matter i had one on my 80 series and loved it and never got hassled by the cops so i'll be gettin one for my GU

but unfortuantely look out of place on a GU in an unfinished kind of way. There is just too much that looks unfinished with all that tin wear etc on show beneath the headlights.
X 2 It exposes and doesn't protect the bottom corners of the nose panel. Not a fan of those 3 pc bolt togethers either.

id be interested to see if it meets all ADR required for a bullbar. Above someone mentioned that it passed ADR for air-bag compliance. there are more ADR's that it needs to comply with (indicator/parker visibility for instance). I dont know much about this all but the mention of ADR compliance for air bags made me wonder.

hopefully someone else knows more about this and might have some better in put?

edit: i just looked at the pics linked above, the aeriel/light mount on the side of the main hoop does not look like it would pass, the smallest radius i belive your aloud is 5mm for ADR compliance.

I had a good look at one a while back and if i remember correctly they seemed a bit flimsy.
It actually comes in three parts (the two wings and the middle section) and it then bolts together and it just didn't seem very rugged.
I like the style of it though

Thats true about the ADR's as I mentioned it. The X-Rox is ADR approved for airbag compatibility but I didnt think about any other ADR, should of been something I thought of as it is kind of my job....whoops oh well.

I shall try and ring a compliance place tomorrow. Anyone know of a place in Perth that specialise in 4wd compliance?

I realy don't think a company would go to the hassle of testing a bar and getting it compliant for airbags and not the rest of the relavant ADRs.

From personal experience, if the issuing officer doesn't like you or something on your vehicle he will canary it regardless of what a piece of ADR paper says.

What you have to decide is will it be cheaper to argue it in court or just take it over the pits.

I wanted LF 240's or Bull Lights to fit in it which they did without protruding past the front. Loop could have been a bit lower though. I showed the bar on the Rodeo to our regional transport SA inspector who comes here regularly to inspect and pass/fail truck and bus repairs and mods and he said it was fine in all aspects of the ADR's and would even pass the new regs which were back then soon coming into effect on Jan 2010. Would have been keen to make some (with some minor changes) for the Rodeo's but wasn't enough interest. Have since sold the rodeo too.
