No Dylan, i didn't see any point i just thought it looked better sitting upright as std position..
It probably makes a difference to dust holding on a paper element if you reverse airflow direction but i think you run K&N? NFI what they are like but their website does say this... "It is important to flow the filter in the correct orientation as to the direction of designed air flow. This is the direction of air moving from the dirty side to the clean side of the element.'

Apologies to the OP for the off topic posts.

The docta box or similar is your only real option if you want to keep that second battery in the usual location.

I did read that on the K&N site but when you look at the filter i just couldn't see any difference to either side of the filter, i even cut one in half to cleck properly its just a cloth material nothing special i could see hence my decision to fit it that way. The paper element is a different story though the paper has a different texture either side etc..Also with a bit of stuffing about the filter will fit the other way though. I just thought or made a logic descision that K&N had the caution there for filter support issues on some OEM air boxes as you know some don't have a lot of support flange to hold the filter in the flow direction.

Sorry for the hijack, iv been looking at the Patrolapart high flow lid, clamps onto original 4.2 airbox
Compared to the complete zd30 unit from patroldocta. Would there be any difference in the two?
4.2 lid I think was around the 350 mark, or zd30 box for 415
Cheers dave

Not trying to be smart here or discredit any products out there but over the last 6 months i have bench tested just about every lid i can get or find. There is no gain at all over the std ZD30 lid and i can safely say many of the lids out there flow less than the std ZD30 lid overall.. some do a little better at mid range air speeds but thats it.. Also i have been playing with a computer generated simulator flow dynamics program to try and find an answer to why this is the case for the lid alone, i thing now i know why, and its due to the transition distance of the bend of the lid to the filter opening its just too short, i can tell you there is nothing you can do with shape size to increase flow under the confines of under bonnet clearances bar short of having a streight fitting connected into the lid..even then the STD filter inside diameter and volume becomes restrictive but this could be due to only 50% of the filter actually flows air..in the real world.

So with what i have found Madmav i wouldn't waste money on any fancy lids or fancy air boxes using the STD ZD filter..i can assure you they are no better and for many they flow less than the std ZD type air box..and lid..There are a few tuning business that have a few tricks to improve the system but that info will have to be supplied by them..

having a bit of trouble at the moment i'm talking to millweld, i've got a td42ti with the different radiator setup so there is an overflow bottle and breather where it's supposed to go, moving the battery is a must

It cost like $4.50 for 90mm m&f stormwater 90deg bend and say at worst $3.70 for a meter of pipe(you only need about 6" of it).
Cut the top out of your airbox so the male end of the bend goes in there (tight) and glue it in with whatever you want to use. Cut about 110mm of stormy pipe and glue in the end of the bend and then stick the original hose back on there.
I had this setup on my ute for a long time. No the PVC pipe does not melt, no it does not go brittle, no it doesn't leak on the top of the airbox where you glue it in and yes it is water tight.
And if you paint it you can't see that it is done. Its just not a fancy stainless looking bit.
And if you want to get a bit fancier you can get a long HDPE 90mm bend and get it welded in to the top of the airbox. I have one of these setups in the shed somewhere that I made and never used as the stormy pipe setup worked so well.
But doing anything to the airbox is pointless if you retain the standard type snorkle and the inner guard plumbing.
I had 4" in to standard airbox with my el-cheapo 90mm top coming out of it for a long time and it did work very well.

Ok so what is the verdict folks? I'm thinking patrol docta right now cause the millweld one looks like the opening is restricted. I'm currently putting a thumping big six litre worked Chevy in my patrol and I'm ready to order air box and snorkel RIGHT NOW!!! Which one flows the best?
