Im in the market for a new welding mask so just wondering what you lot have got and what did you pay?

And also what do you like and dislike about them?

Ive still got the WIA thing i bought years ago and frankly i hate it. $75 at the time. It has three layers of perspex that are impossible to stop them fogging up even after rainx. And the cr2330 battery is impossible find other than ebay.

I use a miller digital elite had it for a couple of years one before that I had for 3 years until a misfortune accident with our forky at the time had that not happened I'd still gave it

Big viewing window in them makes visibility alot better and have all the setting you can think of

I paid 400 a couple of years ago

I've got two, some Boss Welding sub $100 mask, and a UniMig $130ish mask.
Both free thanks to the last job, both pretty good. The Boss is noticeably lighter, and has a smaller viewscreen, but that doesn't worry me much.
When I get another welding job, think I might make my own mask for *****s and giggles. Get a pair of those auto-darkening welding goggles, and build an Imperial Stormtrooper helmet around it, aww yiss!

I have 2 millers the have been going since I did my apprenticeship over 10 years ago

and 1 speedglass that has the side windows. the normal speedglass has too small of a window.

The millers have 4 sensors and are far better for welding in funny positions, and also has a feature to darken from some magic voodoo instead of light, so those pesky forklift flashing lights dont mess with you

I've got a $99 CigWeld auto helmet. For what it is, it's pretty good. It's fairly new so I haven't had any problems with it yet. If I was welding every day, I'd justify a bigger spend, but I'm just an office worker welding on weekends.

No issues with fogging, and I wear a set of clear UV safety glasses underneath it as well.

I would recommend the Unimig Razor Back as pictured , good bang for your buck mines had a heap of use
( I think Total tools have them on special for about $130 . I've got a $600 speedglass helmet but don't use much great helmet but a little heavy .

a cheap cig or wia will work fine too. I wouldn't spend hundreds of dollars unless you're a professional.

$200 mark?
As light as you can get with four sensors.

I lied about my boss helmet, it actually has the larger viewscreen.
Not many other people did, but I use the grind mode all the time.
And seriously, don't get stressed over switching times. When I was first given the Boss, I was disgusted at the quoted 10,000th of a second switching time, 25,000th or nothing. But, it's Australian standards, the switching was no issue, suffered more eye fatigue from light bounced off yellow shirts than through the lense.
I used to think that I was going to eventually treat myself to an expensive mask, but thankfully experience taught me that it's really not necessary, for me at least anyway. I do love that feeling of being able to spend that money on something else ;)

ive had 3 since i started working as a sheetie, started off with a $100 cig weld 1 lasted about a year before it started taking to long to come on,
then went to a uni mig 1 about $150 lasted me about 3 year,
then got a miller elite at $380 and hands down is the best 1 ive had big screen and also has holders for magnifying lens that is good for blokes that cant use their glasses while welding, ive had it over 4 years no only replaced batteries once and it gets used all day every day,

ive seen a few tradies using the blue WIA ones but they have to small of a screen for me

I use a speedglas, paid $500 for it about 12 years ago gets used at least 3 or 4 times a week and it is still going strong, I figure you cant put a price on your eyes so I bought the fastest one I could find at the time.

Get yourself a balaclava to go with it or you'll end up with a funny looking suntan, and let us know how it goes. Like I said, I'm not game to use it but it goes in the Patrol with a handpiece, some cables and some rods just in case I ever have to try some emergency welding with a couple of car batteries.

Cheers,

I use one of these and rate it pretty highly for the price seems to work well mines be dropped kicked etc I've had it about 2 or 3 years now and love it a bigger viewing lens would be nice other than that this is a great little helmet i use it every day for work and at night school cant fault it

Unimig Graphic Auto Welding Helmet | eBay
