Solar panel on roof rack, pain.

This job quickly went in the too hard basket.

mounting this 170w solar panel to the large aluminium roof rack. The problem isn’t the mounting, it’s the fact that I realised that the panel takes up a large percentage of the roof rack space. That and I feel running the largish cables through the rear doors is bound to induce leaks.

i’m telling myself that if I make the panel easily removable, i can rip it off if I need the extra roof space…. Like if we were to go camping 🙄

probably should find a smaller solar panel.

Well I’ve done the unthinkable. I’ve mounted the panel under the roof rack!!

I know I know, it was that or throw it in the bin. Being an aluminium roof rack it has more and thicker supports that will shade the panel.

see how it goes.

Pics please to make this thread a true DIY.
not sure I want to encourage people to follow my path. But it is a Forum, I’ll get pictures and report the success or otherwise of the under mount panel

Photos attached.

picked up a lithium battery, when I work out how I’m going to connect it up I’ll find out how many amps the substandard setup can supply

6a - 80w is the highest I’ve seen it so far. Washed some of the dust off the panel last night.

Actually pretty happy with that considering how much of the panel is shaded.

the XTM 40 LT fridge uses about 4a when it’s running, but keeps in mind it’s not running all the time.

I'd be surprised if you get better than 5-6 amps with all the shade that will be on it.
I nearly forgot. Credit for the call on the solar panel output 🏆
