Just wondering if anyone’s got their stock tb tuned and if it’s worth it? I’m using mine as a daily driver now, using about 25l/100 and wondering if I was to get a Nistune put in if it was worth seeing if I can get a little more grunt and better fuel economy, I’m driving about 80kms a day and it’s getting expensive,
I spoke to a tuner and he talked about putting a wideband on to start off with and see what’s going on, and go from there.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated, cheers

cheers

Tyres should be good I found up to 32" is fine the exhaust sounds good should help it a bit. When you check the fuel economy are you using a gps for accuracy because the speedo and kilometres will most probably be out unless you have had it corrected.
Other than that keeping it in good tune is the best thing for it. Is it auto or manual obviously auto will use more. Stop starting at lights etc doesn't help they were ok in there day because fuel was a lot cheaper.

I was just going off the speedo, it was an old government car sold at auction and bought it off the old guy that’s had it for years, he didn’t use it much but looked after it pretty well. I’ll start using a gps to track it and see how I’m going, but it’s booked in for this Wednesday with the tuner, was just wondering if I was better putting the money into something else.

Rare to find one with such low km probably see how it goes after the tune and seeing how the mileage is with the gps over a bit of time to get an idea on how it's going the see if you need to keep it or replace it. I had a carby model yrs ago the efi didn't change the econ much in the real world it might have on the factory paperwork but they are thirsty. Mine wasn't too bad around 16lph to around 19lph from memory but I was living in Mackay where it's not as hilly as some areas.

I think being a government car is was probably ran on gas, I had all the gas taken out of it since I’ve had it. It seems to run and drive really well, I’ll see how it goes after this tune, it’s really nice to drive just thirsty, but I bought it knowing they were thirsty, but I’d be happy if I got a consistent 20L/100, only downside is the paint job, the old guy that owned it had a go at doing it himself and all the clear coat is peeling off.

Hopefully the wideband will help with AFR readings. Just some basic stuff you can do: injector cleaner and new/clean air filter.

Depending on how much power it actually has you could look at changing diff ratios to higher gearing, but will make it slower off the mark.

It would probably chew more fuel with a higher gearing they don't rev too bad at hwy speeds as they are but they tend to chew more in built up areas with lots of stop starting, on hills but even worse if you try and keep up with the traffic.
Getting an extended rotor button is common for these engines a mechanic I had yrs ago said they have to big of a gap and also increasing top dead centre by up to 5 deg to see how it runs. It helped mine it ran sweet I also had a k&n air filter to help it breath but as I mentioned you need to keep them in good tune and if you have a heavy foot you pay for it at the pump.
