G'day guys,

Did you install it as it came (ie did you adjust the screw prior to install)?

Got mine today, wondering if it needs adjusting before or should i install it and then adjust it to suit?

Thanks
Scott

^^^ Was just thinking the same thing.
Mine should be arriving next week hopefully :)

Thanks,
and with regards to sussing out the max boost, is that just a case of unwinding a few turns, driving it and seeing what max pressure you reach, then repeat?

I have NFI about 2.8's man. Not sure what the max recommended boost is or about the ECU etc. I'm sure the relevant info is already here somewhere though.

Yes but with adjustments of half a turn only...gently gently is the go.
Interestingly with my chip on, max boost peaks at 15-16 ish but with chip off it boosts upto 17, NFI why.

Thanks for the info Smiffy,
Your pics from a page 1 are very helpful, i had a feeling i was looking at the right hose, but nice to know for certain which way the controller goes.

The controller looks like the easy part, getting motivated to fit that gauge is the difficult part

Spoke to my diesel guru in Tas. and he maintains the best place to instal it is in the rubbish bin in its original packaging! My application was to be in a 4.2TDI. He claims the aftermarket unit fights against the Nissan wastegate to produce spasmodic boost spikes. I had already fitted it before I spoke to him, and found no improvement. Don't go above 12 lb. if you must fit it. Set it by adjusting pressure whilst blowing compressed air through unit from a compressor preset at the regulator to 9lb.

I have one on my 2.8. Good improvement, no spikes and works perfect. Have it set to 14psi. On long hills will hit 15psi.

Being a boost controller it is ment to fight against the factory wastegate. But won't cause spasmodic spikes, it's not a bleed valve, its a ball ans spring controller.

its not a ecu controlled wastegate so it not going to fight against it.

the only problem with TD42tdi could be overboost protection if you go to high and on some engines the boost comp or ecu will reduce fuel when boost goes higher than stock.

an advantage, even if you stick to stock boost level, is reducing wastegate creep. so boost comes on a bit quicker.

So I'm about 90% certain I know the answer to this, but i'll ask anyways

Assuming that the boost controller is working as it should be. If you wound the adjustment nut / screw all the way in, would that stop most / all boost pressure from getting to the wastegate actuator keeping it closed causing a severe over-boost?

yes

Turning the screw inwards will increase boost/ outwards decrease. When first installing your turbotech controller it is recommended to adjust the screw so you can JUST blow through it with your mouth. This will give you stock boost levels, then dial more in from there. The advantage to these controllers is they are a ball and spring design which means the wastegate is kept shut until the desired boost level is achieved, then it will bleed off boost like a conventional boost tee.
Note: For the most accurate results without spiking you need to make your feed from the boost source to the wastegate as short as possible. If you screw in the controller to fully closed then you will overboost until the turbo gives up.

Cool, thanks for clarifying that.

Just go slowly slowly, I set min at the lowest boost and went for a quick drive, only takes 2 minutes to get a rough idea of boost levels. Once you know the starting boost simply adjust small amounts then retest.

You will get the hang of it.

Cheers

I reckon my cruddy ebay controller might not be functional. Cause it doesn't matter how I adjust it, I ain't getting over 11psi. Get's up there well, and holds it well, but even winding the controller to within a mm of fully closed there's nothing happening with the boost!
I've even tried winding up the chip to add more fuel - all that does is create smoke and send EGT's near 500*c
Might take the controller out and get a new baseline.
