Just make sure the gearbox in whatever you're about to buy is all-metal, some of the big named stuff Bunnings stocks are the cheaper version with plastic gears, which will only lead to disappointment.

Tell me about it. I melted the gearset on my last Bosch drill in the first 3 weeks of owning it. Got the Makita for the same dollars and it is still good after 2 years although it is getting noisy now. It is only used with a 61mm holesaw so it gets a flogging.

For home use most of the name brand drills will last, it's the batteries that are the problem. I bought an expensive Panasonic & the batteries only lasted a couple of years, after that they would not hold a charge for more than a couple of days. Brother in law recommended it as he said all the tradies at his work used them, 2 years later he says they all got rid of them because the batteries died. Every drill I've had with a fast charger has had the batteries die. Now I have an Aldi one with a slow charger & even if I don't use it for a couple of months they stay charged.

AEG, BEEN RENOING THE HOUSE FOR THE PAST 6 WEEKS, got the the drill pack , impact and normal with 3 bateries for $299 and the the renovator tool for another $129. ****s over every makita, bosch and ryobi ive owned. the impact is frigging awesome, drilling and screwing into 70 yo hardwood. i have the 1.5 amp batteries and they do the job

i got a snap on drill. its alright.
plenty of grunt and going alright after a couple of years. though i did kill one tube notching with it. though thats more my fault than the tools
though i feel its overpriced compared to some of em though battery life still seems to be pretty great. and goes hand in hand with the best cordless rattle gun out at the time.

if i had my time again with them though they would be milwalkie or hitachi

Go Hitachi, current new ones have 4 AH batteries.

Son built a garage with one using a 3AH battery, I now have the tools and still going strong (and holding charge) after 3 years.... Battery rattle gun is THE GO for changing tyres.... Just need a decent wheel brace to nip up the last bit, love the gear.....

Sounds like you need a snap on rattle gun. I could strip wheel nuts with mine if I wanted to haha. But cordless rattle guns no matter what the brand are the bees knees

I received the latest Milwaukee 18v Brushless impact drill driver for Chrissy and also the angle grinder with 2 batteries (3amphr) plus charger and it only cost $575 from VEK tools in Sydney.

On a side note, the company that ownes Milwaukee owns, AEG and Ryobi and are all manufactured in china, probably from the same facility, we use the AEG stuff at work and highly recommend them as they are absolutely hammered daily, like 2-3 batteries being used over 24hrs per drill and the driver goes thru 6 batteries a day lol, good stuff for the home handy man.

The choice is yours

it was $299 and AEG are the only ones to offer a warranty on batteries (apparently). he did tell me that they come out of the same factory as milwalkee, they are only 1.5ah batteries but i think thats all i'll need for a while. 3ah are $99 but he said hold off cos 4ah are coming
the $299 makita kit was one they made esp to sell cheap with 1.1ah batteries that dont fit any other makita.
i guess like anything we buy time will tell how good they are.

He was wrong on the warranty on Batteries, Mil have 2 yrs and the 4Ah are awesome too, a typo on my last post, I have the 4AH ones and at ~90-100 bucks each are well priced, you will enjoy the little impact driver, it has 151nm of torque from memory and the drill driver is ~51nm from memory.

Not sure if I've posted here yet...

I have the 4Ah Hitachi kit with 18V grinder, drill and rattle gun (Apparently I'm a radio tech... lol) They are awesome. Some of the guys I work with use Milwauke gear and love it. I've used an 18V AEG drill on a big project in QLD before, it copped a hiding (drilling and hole sawing cat trucks) all day every day and it loved it, it was a bloody good bit of kit and well priced.

I havent read the thread but I've tried most brands of drill, makita dewalt and milwaukee a LOT.

Milwaukee is definetly the best i've used. All they need is a radio as good as the makita.

I would never buy a Makita again, I got one for my old man and the chuck and batteries died in two years, he isn't a tradie... My step dad is a builder and the only dewalt stuff they use is the really old stuff, power drills over 10 years old, used to mix paint, drill concrete etc.

There is a definite difference between the cheaper Makita range and the up market LXT stuff, the cheap crap is terrible, it brings the brand name down for sure. Last time I checked Makita had about 6-7 different models of impact driver, all with similar looks, but a huge variance in specs, and that's just the LXT range.

I'm fairly certain that what I bought him was top of the line at the time Jamie, this was about 9-10 years ago... I'm not up to date with the Makita range these days as I will never buy their crap again. He still has the drill, even though it's farked he wont throw it out! lol. AEG really excelled as far as bang for buck is concerned. I use Hitachi and it's very good, milwaukee is right up there too.

All they need is a radio as good as the makita.

I have the M12 radio, its great and durable. Has an auxilery input for your phone to play music etc. It does run off the M12 batteries

If your wondering why they dont charge the battery as well like the makita? It's because the radio with charger/runs off a battery idea is patented by (i think) Hitachi, everyone else pays a licence to use the patent. Milwaukee wont pay it, i dont know why?? Thats from the Milwaukee Rep.
