Which Snorkel

Just for the hell of it, i did once tested a 4 inch ram head with it on and off on the dyno. So ram head on and the cut pipe only. It did surprise me a bit. power levels didn't change much at all but peak torque took a sever dive, On a TD42 and EFR6758 @ 822Nm with Ram head it lost 46 Nm peak torque with the cut pipe, and the torque curve was a bit lazy.

A long time ago when this subject was being discussed here i did a test on my flow bench using 2.8 meters of straight 100mm alloy tube. I set the bench to 1.5 inch mercury to see what flow could be achieved. Obviously the bench couldn't reach 1.5 inch mercury to max out the bench @ a bit over 1100CFM. So i found a 8 meter length of tube in the work shop and flowed that with a 90 degree silicone bend at the bench. Without ram head cut pipe i managed to reach a resistance of just over .5 inch mercury with flow maxed out. With ram head the bench maxed out on flow but resistance wouldn't move of zero.

So the Ram head design helps increase flow even without moving at speed. It has the same effect as a bell mouth or a rolled edge on the pipe cut end.

I cannot imagine how much lost flow there would be with a manufactures emblem welded in the end of a cut pipe facing backwards. That crap defies logic except for the young fools cool factor.

We usually fit snorkels for water crossings and to feed fresh ambient air to the engine. For my logic if we gain a bit of torque or a bit quicker spool for free why not make the most of it and fit a Ram head. They look cool from my perspective but they do collect vines and crap when in the bush but simply turn it around and problem fixed.

If a snorkel was a performance modification why don't you see them on high performance cars? I understand airbox modifications but in my opinion it's main job is water crossings. More than happy with my $109 ocam 4x4 safari style snorkel with factory airbox etc!!
Well if you look at any performance car these day or race car you will find they have a pipe or snorkel from air box to the pressure area at the front of the car. it called ambient pressure air entry exactly what we do for a 4x4 with a ram head except we have the advantage of height for water crossings. Actually all modern car have some sort of piping from the air box to the pressure area at the front of the car.
