ARB paid for 60% of the ad?

 

If this was the case i would have thought i would have been biased towards the TJM or Terrain Tamer but i didn't seem to be

they should put one of the cheap aldi o ebay winches in the comparo. i would like to see them side by side, to settle once for all all the arguments about them being good enough or not.

 

The problem is that when you need a winch you are usually in deep s#*t and you want the most reliable and best winch available

There is a big price difference between the cheap ones & the dear ones but the money you saved wont help if the winch cant do the job or fails half way up a hill side

I would assume that the 6 horsepower motor has something to do with this, as opposed to the 4.6 on the other warn winches.

 

When you look on the Warn website and compare the 9.5 XP (6 hp motor) to the XD9000 (4.6 hp motor) the XP is draws slightly more amps for the same load

You guys make me laugh...... I hear so many yeah but for 500$ if it gets me out twice its paid for itself ......... I could buy 4 of these for a warn but a previous poster nailed it.

Warns have stood the test of time, and will do due to their quality control. Piss n moan into the breeze when you bought a 500$ cheapie then have you holiday farked or worse lives endangered due to your champagne taste on a beer budget.

For all I care keep buying the aldi's and the black ridge etc .... I'll keep my M12000 thanks.

Sorry to burst ya bubble my M12000 is made in USA.

 

I must admit I like the comparisons the mags run; 4wd Action has run a few on various products and I remember 4x4 Australia did a winch one a few years ago.

I like the fact that (in the case of winches) Warn doesn't win hands down, and a few times the 'Premier' winch won and whilst still $1500, the amp draw readings and other (as real as possible) 'real world' testing of the cheaper winches gives us more information than just listening to salesman and the usual "buy a Warn or nothing" that permeates these forums.

Good point on the 'made in China' thing too! It amuses when these companies get stuff MADE IN CHINA, and then try to appeal to our patriotism to continue buying their gear!

Does anyone recall the price of 'Bonds' clothing lines DROPPING in price since they exported the jobs OS? No, of course not, they POCKET the extra profit, not pass on the savings to their customers!! Same thing with ARB, Warn etc!!

 

I would have liked to see a hydraulic winch in there because that is what I am looking at.

 

My 9000 warn is six years old and also made in USA.

ask me with the whole china made means crap, it doesn't it just means things are made to different quality levels

now take this
I brought a warm 6HP motor for my older high mount from ARB cost $560

mate brought a cheaper ebay 6HP motor (no name brand) $340

when the motor came (Ebay one) you could still clearly just make out the W on the end cooling cap

now this means two things to me

either a shifty china man is stealing them and selling them off on ebay for personal profit

or the company that makes these motors for warn has a surplus of defective ones that didn't pass the standards of warn, and are flogging them off on ebay

to me same go's for winches and anything else cheap it maybe good quality or it maybe poor thats the chance you take when you make the decision, but seriouly a whole winch for under $1000 bucks compared to a quality brand name such as warn or ox has to have a difference other than a 50% mark up on profit

that's like saying a bighorn is just as good as a KM2 tyre when you can push the side wall of a bighorn in a little with your finger

 

I wouldn't go out of my way to buy anything made in the USA.

that mag did the same storey not that long ago with a differant out come its all about who pays the most money wins why do you think roothy drives toyotas, milo should have been scrap metal years ago,,I dont pay for that bias mag any more there are much beter mags out there...

I got an Aldi winch hasn't let me down at all, always test it before I go out and always worked. Used it in anger a couple of times, I just remember that it's a cheapie and so I let it rest for longer during pulls so it doesn't heat up too much... it's not like you're in a winch comp!!

Yeah I pulled it apart and re greased it and sealed it up again, but maintance usually helps with things lasting.

You guys must be so hardcore if you are always using your winch. As I've said I've only used it once and that is because I forgot my maps and knew this particular track could get me where I wanted but I also vowed never to drive it again the first time. My view is there is way better money to be spent on my car than a winch and if it works and gets you out of trouble... all be it slowly then so be it.

What's everybody's thoughts on the 12500ld ironman winch?

 

a mate of mine has the king one winch that won on the front of his D40, first trip out we run the the rope out just to seat it back on the drum like they tell you at the shop. light pull up a rocky incline nothing serious and the rope broke in 2 places. i was amazed how easily it broke and for no reason. tell the shop oh we will contact the supplier, supplier says he will contact rope supplier blah blah. 3 weeks later with a month old winch sorry we dont warrant rope. fair enough not to warrant winch rope or cable but clearly there is something wrong with it, lucky he wasnt out the back of woop woop up to the door handles in ****.
just makes me wonder how many people that have the same winch will get in the **** and then come unstuck.

I was a little concerned after reading the comparo because I have just purchased a Tabor 9000. I was told it was a Warn product & the quality was very good. But out of all the winches it clearly got the hottest. The reason I went with the Tabor was because it was a cheaper version Warn winch & for the sort of 4WD I do it should be able to cope easily. So after seeing the results I took it down to Malcolm Leslie to see if there was anything I could do to waterproof & strengthen it. He assured me that it was a quality winch & with a few mods it will give me plenty of yrs of use. He also mentioned that the reason the motor got hot was because of the reduced horsepower. Another thing he mentioned was that all the Tabor's parts are interchangeable with the Warn's which I thought was good.
