We couldn't have had a much better time on our five day trip through the Vic High Country over the summer. Plenty of beautiful riverside campsites on the Howqua, Jamieson and Big River along with some 4wding and hiking, absolute bliss.

I've finally got around to putting this together so here is my video covering the trip and an itinerary below:

I've lost my tracking logs, but If you cross over the river at Vernnells Bush Camp, you can jump on the Old Reefton Logging Track which has some great climbs up to about 950m elevation where you get a good view of the valleys. If you follow that track for about an hour or two, it will take you all the way up to where the rover feeds into Eildon.

If you go south from Vernnells, there's the Frenchman's Spur track, it's got some good climbs but there are a few super steep logging tracks that connect to it, but I can't quite remember where. And that's if it hasn't been graded or closed....
