You could but you'd need to keep the boost quite low, the intake air temps down and the fuel up.
JoseM is running with the standard ECU at the moment but he has a good knock detection device.

I have an Xede piggyback that I found on Ebay for $100 odd. It might be a bit old technology but it's more than adequate for the fuel & timing adjustments that I need. It allows me to add a MAP sensor and use that as load signal.

Secondhand Haltechs pop up on Gumtree from time to time but I don't know anything about their models or what's suitable.

You won't really get the best out of your turbo without some form of adjustable fuel & timing control.

Ok that's good to know as I'am like you JFF45 i'am starting to get bits together so its just a straight swap over when time comes..
I have a motor sitting in the shed that i'am going to rebuild with the h beam rods so i'am just adding up what things cost and what can be built first..

Another couple of questions for the tb turbo guys, what did you do for the exhaust? Does the turbo muffle it enough to run a straight through 2.5 - 3 inch pipe without having an annoying drone? How did you go about making up a dump pipe or did you get an exhaust place to make one? Where did you mount O2 sensors?

As I haven't installed the turbo yet, I have no idea what the effect will be.
I plan on keeping my current 2.5" cat back system and my original cat. I've made my own 3" dump with the internal wastegate which will reduce to 2.75" before the cat.
I currently have a wideband O2 sensor that also supplies the narrowband signal for the ECU. The sensor will be in the pipe before the cat, same as it is now.

Here's a pic of the dump pipe I made. I'm not really happy with it but I'll try it like that to see how it goes. It's the 2nd 12mm flange that I've bought at $50 each.
The 2.75" elbow is just slipped in to see what it might look like. Not sure if I'll go with the V band.

The manifold was made in Tasmania. $400 delivered. Found the guy on Ebay.
I welded the small tabs on for the heatshield.

I made the heatshield from a stainless steel mini-sheet from Bunnings - $48.

I can't find that guys manifolds anymore. He also did a tuned length high mount if it's the guy I'm thinking of.

Well I've found a new garret t4 with a 1.05AR. Quite cheap. Will it be too big and laggy?

I ran 3" exhaust with a hi flow silencer, no catalyst. Also my exhaust pipe dies before my rear diff.
Straight pipe resulted a little loud for my taste...
For the O2 sensor I just drilled a hole on the manifold and screwed the narrow band in there.

You can also put a bung lower down the pipe and screw on a wide band sensor and set it up to mimic a narrow band.

I really only want a low boost motor even though iam going to build a new motor built for a turbo.

Turbo is too small..

Xr6 turbo is what most are using. Gt3582 I believe.
1.06 AR housing is best in a T3. From what I've read.

Hence why I want to know if the T4 1.05 is too big.

I took the advice of several people who all suggested the XR6 turbo. I was prepared to take the risk on a secondhand unit in spite of my inexperience.
I'll soon know if I bought a dud or not..

So yeah it will be pretty big and laggy. A .86 rear with a big wastegate works really well on the 4.5L patrol and xr6 turbo.

Yeah ok iam just lost with what size you need , so will the xr6 turbo boost low..
