Just been on holidays, 785km round trip, and 105 litres,
13.38L/100k, pretty happy with that.
Includes going up the Toowoomba range blowing a 200series off 😀 and driving through brisvegas twice and around Coolum, rest was highway driving, 107 in the 100zones and 117 in the 110 zones.

They don't call you fastfox for nothing :)
We still constantly get 15-16 round town and 13 on open runs.
Haha, the vehicle monitoring cameras cramp my style [emoji35] , nah not really, but it's hard to deny the faster the traffic flows the better it is, more spaced out ect!, but does anyone know how much leeway they give you with those monitoring cameras?

We stopped for the kids half way between them so I assume our average speed over the distance would be way under??

Howdy folks,

I am a 200 Series diesel driver ordinarily but have swapped vehicles temporarily with another family member. A stock-standard June 2015 build Y62 Ti-L. Very nice, except I can't get my head around why the fuel consumption is nothing like what you guys are reporting.

I filled up the tank with 98 octane and reset the trip computer, but just driving around by myself in cool weather (circa 22 degrees C), 60% highway 40% suburban (no traffic jam), the average fuel consumption shown on the built in computer is hovering at just above the 20 litre per 100 km mark. Tyre pressures checked at 37 PSI, 40,000 kms on the odometer, so it's not brand new.

How are you guys getting your numbers? Just wanting to know if something is wrong with this particular vehicle. I'm driving along gently at the pace of other vehicles on the street, not hooning around. At 100 km/hr the engine is barely at 1500 RPM - I'm not opening up the taps. Just can't figure out what's wrong. I've even given the MAF sensor a few squirts of MAF sensor cleaner, just to be sure that it's not dirty.

Sorry, I know this topic is sensitive, and I'm not having a go at the Patrol, just hoping there's a fix somewhere. Could it be that the VVEL is not working? Is that controlled by a fuse? I haven't checked the fuses yet.

Hey Tempest,
Biggest impacting factors - YOUR particular commute, and the organic thing between the steering wheel and the seat.

Not telling you anything new there I suspect...

My urban economy seems to sit around 16-18 l/100km over the last few months. That is when it gets used around-town... I would not call it easy on fuel - it is a 400hp, 3t vehicle.

What I HAVE noticed is that the dash computer is waaaaaaay off. The more time idling, the further away from reality it is. That being said, the only numbers I ever quote are from the dash computer because I honestly can't be bothered doing the other sums every time I fill up :)

But fuel consumption/economy figures quoted on an Internet forum.....my advice is take them with a grain of salt - you can only go by your own experiences. Just keep it in the back of your mind that the dash computer is a lying little bitch ;)

Just did approx 2000kms with most of that towing a camper trailer (1600kms) and the rest beach driving - averaged 17.9L/100kms, pretty happy with that and we weren't sitting on 100kph. Just having that power available to overtake when needed is priceless!

Darwin to kununurra. Return Twice in 1 week. Speedo was sitting on 140km per hr. 850km 1 way an 700km of that was on the 140km per hr (on the speedo).
Fuel average 19L per 100k. I can live with that.
Lifted, loaded up, annoying roof rack, all the bar work an AT (ko2).

Update:

I have now discovered that the avg fuel display on the Infotainment system was incorrect. There are two bar graphs side by side, namely the average consumption on the left and the instantaneous on the right. For some reason, the average graph was "frozen" on 22 litres per 100 kms, but the instantaneous was moving up and down like normal. I twigged that something was not right because the next screen selection was the historical intervals and it was never moving at all, also frozen. And the third clue was that I found the small display screen at the center of the instrument cluster could also display the avg and instantaneous consumption, and it was showing a much more reasonable 17.5 litres per 100 kms whilst the infotainment system was stuck on 22 litres per 100 kms.

Anyway, I have since reset the trip computer on the infotainment system and now it appears to be consistent with the instrument cluster display. Phew!! So it was just a trip computer glitch.

17.5 litres per 100 kms is more than acceptable in my books for the driving that I do. Sanity has returned and I'm a happy chappy again.

Too bad I have to return the Patrol back to its rightful owner tonight, but I do get my 200 Series back.

EDIT: Drove in peak hour traffic and avg fuel consumption went up to 20.5 litres per 100 kms. Ouch!! Have now returned Patrol and the 200 Series feels like a slightly smaller vehicle (which it is).

Cardigan mobile? LOL.

The oversized Camry has averaged 13.3 calculated kms over its 7 year life so far, 161 fuel ups. Best of 10.7 worst of 22. I keep records for tax purposes. Calculated = fuel reading from pump after tank is brimmed full to the nozzle neck divided by distance travelled. Filed away using Fuelly smartphone app. So pretty accurate numbers, and this includes towing the 2 tonne caravan every summer. But economy seems to have been getting slightly worse of late, perhaps due to ageing lambda sensors or heavier diff oils that I have recently used.

I drive it just normally, and it battles the typical Melbourne rush hour traffic. Negligible low range, typically bitumen driving on my own. Fuel is mostly Caltex Vortex diesel from the same servo near home.

Vehicle is 100% stock except for Kaymar rear bar. So it's got Dunlop Grandtrek AT22 stock tyres, stock factory suspension, no chip, etc.

Yep thats exactly the same as my last 200 series...to within a 10th.
A lot people here must drive their y62's down hill both ways with a strong tail wind as I've never come close to getting some of those numbers. Mine always goes around 20/100 around town, it would be impossible to ever see mid or high teens without a significant amount of freeway driving.

Around town, the y62 uses 7L/100kms more than the 200 diesel and about 3/100 on the freeway. Identical drivers and roads.
Completely meaningless comparing what 'Frank' in perth once got with what 'Peter' in Brisbane gets.

Ive also actually found the computer generated figures to be very similar to the actual calculated ones.

That's the most sensible thing you have ever said huggy!
I'm honestly surprised you haven't sold it, that extra $20 a week must be a killer..

Temp, that's about right by the sounds of it. Throw some 33's on it and bar work and your basically at 62 fuel levels.
13.5 with ours at 115-120
16 town

Done 30k in out 62 and ave to date is 15.2 ands that's a pretty honest average of towing our 2t jayco 5k worth, town and highway runs and a fair bit of beach.
Essentially still stock apart from awning and flat rack(that added at least 1lph), snorkel and kn filter and exhaust(headers and unichip are yet to go on)

I really do laugh with all this discussion of fuel consumption/economy.

One of the reasons being - a 3 tone 4wd is never going to be good on fuel. Hell, even my motorbike only gets marginally better economy than my wifes car :) There are sooooooo many variables involved, comparing one to the other is kinda pointless and silly.

Here's some reality for you all - most times, I am lucky to see under 20 l/100km on the dash readout. My vehicle gets used the majority for one thing - towing the van. I drive it every weekend to keep it ticking over when it's otherwise not being used but that is weekend running around not conducive to good mileage, and every now and again if I am feeling particularly sooky with the weather - I'll drive it to work. But to be honest, a vehicle this large in the crappy multilevel carparks we have here in Hobart isn't my idea of fun - so I'll car pool with the Mrs instead if I can.

And you know what? I don't regard that 20 l/100km as particularly bad. I'm not in competition with anyone, not trying to beat some corporate average, and when I feel like using the right pedal to get loud, I do it. This thing goes one HELL of a lot harder than my previous vehicle - a BMW X5 diesel - and that X5 was pulling 14 to 15 l/100km on the same kind of usage.

Hell, if I were worried about fuel economy I would never have bought a Y62. But then I would never have bought a LC200 either. If fuel consumption were an issue I wouldn't own a fat-arsed caravan either.

But that fuel consumption difference between what I get, and what similar size/capability vehicles get....it's well and truly covered for many years by the money saved on purchase price. (Helps when you pay nearly 70 grand less than retail :) )

For the genuine Y62 owners out there who don't really care about what other people think, if I may suggest this....don't buy into the discussion. There are always the naysayers, always those who say "oh, that can't be right", and always those who believe what they believe because they don't know any different. Their opinion is their opinion - and they are entitled to it. Do you honestly CARE what they think?

An update on our economy after approx 35000km, I still drive it like I stole it most of the time, so that hasn't changed :), and the other times we tow a 2.6T offroad caravan (and at 100kph not at 85-90) so our economy is never going to be great, we get about 16L/100 on the highway (but we don't do much of this without the van on) 19-20L/100 around town, and 24-26L/100 under most normal condtions towing, but when there are big hills about it has hit 32L/100 (the back way from oberon to goulburn is bloody hilly and shattered our economy). It is what it is.

I think if someone bought one of these hoping it was a Fuel Miser they probably realise by now they've made a monumental f****** up but after purchasing one of these for 40k less than equivalent size diesel it's comforting to know that they use stuff all more fuel to do the same job .

I'm happy with mine, uses a little less that the 4.8 GU and where the 4.8 struggled up hills with 2.7T in tow I find the Y62 eases up without a lot of fuss. Sure sink the foot in and blast away and overtake everybody but I keep that for reserved occasions. Let everyone else think how good their fuel misers are I've nothing to prove. A mate of mine last week was boasting his European van gets 8l/100k, yeah wait till you load it up and then want to overtake, good luck to him.
Cheers BruceR
