I understand fuel economy is on most peoples minds and the reason for this post but for what they are if one can get under 17L/100 city driving it should be looked at as a clear bonus

Most I think expect it to use fuel as it is after all a 2.7T V8 4wd with power

Wonder what a Lexus 570 petrol equivalent gets, comparing a 200 diesel to petrol all the time, why never petrol to petrol with similar engine capacity

From my basic understanding of maths rough figures putting premium fuel and diesel at say $1.50p/L and sticking with the diesel/petrol comparison

Say a 200 can squeeze 13L/100, y62 average say 17L/100. Ok 5L per 100 for a go anywhere beast (bias of course)
ok that makes say 5L/100 or $75 per 1,000 or $750 per 10,000 to = not even $15 a week

To break that down into Jim Beam cans that is less than a 6 pack a week
Haters always seem to bring economy into it, how many do not blink when paying $30 for a daily pack of smokes

Mine with over 80% city driving and stock tyres shows on dash 17.8L/100 it has just clicked over 50,000km and I have never reset the dash so it must be a total average, used to be 17.5 but new increase last week was from maybe last 6 months of Caltex 98 from BP 98 or just needs a Maf clean.
Apparently the dash is not 100% accurate from what I have read and reads higher but it is designed to use fuel and still puts a smile on my dial every day I drive it :)

Great response. Its always disappointing that so many people focus on just the fuel figures. Ours has averaged 15.1 in 34,000km (including towing our van for over 10k) which we are happy with.
If u do a lot of idling the on board trip meter will be out as it switches to 30/100 when the vehicle is idling which is a little silly

Hey guys
First time poster here haha

ive just purchased a 2016 ti Y62
Im getting really high fuel consumption, 110km out of 1/4 of a tank.
The prediction is saying 17.5l per hundred but this is definitely not right when 1/4 tank is 35l.
Most mostly all on the highway too.
Is there anything that can people suggest to get looked at?
If it was Actually getting these figures ide be happy but my opinion its not.
Thanks for ya time
Cheers

Meezy92,
The Y62 fuel gauge is woeful. It reads low all of the time. Possibly something to do with the overseas models having a 100 litre tank while we get the additional 40 litres extra. Both my old series 1 and the new series 5 are the same. When the needle on the gauge is at the half mark I’m lucky to fit 40l in. Warning light comes on with 35 litres left in the tank. It’s just a matter of getting used to it over time. However it’s better than the gauge reading high and leaving you out of fuel like my old Prado did

Howdy folks,

I am a 200 Series diesel driver ordinarily but have swapped vehicles temporarily with another family member. A stock-standard June 2015 build Y62 Ti-L. Very nice, except I can't get my head around why the fuel consumption is nothing like what you guys are reporting.

I filled up the tank with 98 octane and reset the trip computer, but just driving around by myself in cool weather (circa 22 degrees C), 60% highway 40% suburban (no traffic jam), the average fuel consumption shown on the built in computer is hovering at just above the 20 litre per 100 km mark. Tyre pressures checked at 37 PSI, 40,000 kms on the odometer, so it's not brand new.

How are you guys getting your numbers? Just wanting to know if something is wrong with this particular vehicle. I'm driving along gently at the pace of other vehicles on the street, not hooning around. At 100 km/hr the engine is barely at 1500 RPM - I'm not opening up the taps. Just can't figure out what's wrong. I've even given the MAF sensor a few squirts of MAF sensor cleaner, just to be sure that it's not dirty.

Sorry, I know this topic is sensitive, and I'm not having a go at the Patrol, just hoping there's a fix somewhere. Could it be that the VVEL is not working? Is that controlled by a fuse? I haven't checked the fuses yet.
hey mate
Ive just purchased a 2016 ti series 3 and having the same issues.
Filled it up with 95 predicted 800kms out of the tank with average of 17.5l per 100kms which i was like oh yeh thatll be alright yet to find out that ive almost used the full tank and has only done 400kms which i find absolutely pathetic.
Took it into to mechanic for them to check over with the warranty i got and they rekon theres nothing wrong with it and for him to say there just a big thirsty mother.
35l i find something majorly wrong.
Any help would be appreciated
Cheers

Its got a bit of fruit like

Bullbar winch
33s
2 inch lift

and mainly highway driving couple of sqwirts but pretty well just stedy on the throttle

Mines does 14-5 to 16 on the hwy. just bull bar and drawers . Stock tyre size for me also .do a good run and go by the fuel bowser not the gauge . Yours is a little high I was expecting you to say your running 35s . Then you can kiss fuel good bye

yeh thats right if it was actually getting that ide be happy just doesn’t seem that way.
What year and model is yours?

I have been driving around in the Y62 Patrol again and prior to performing a fuel consumption test, I gave the Mass Air Flow sensor a clean with a MAF cleaner spray.

Then I filled up with 98 octane BP Ultimate and drove from Sydney to Gosford and back a couple of times. I was not stuck in traffic jams, so 95% highway speeds typically from 80 to 110km/hr.

Aircon was set to a 23degC and external ambient was a warm 26degC. Tyres are factory size BFG AT KO2s and inflated slightly above factory recommendation. Standard suspension, no bullbar, rhinobone with roofbars, no roof rack, so aerodynamics more or less the same as stock factory.

I brimmed the tank both times and used calculator to work out fuel consumption based on distance travelled measured by the odometer.

I managed 16.4 litres per 100kms, with a gentle right foot, as if I were driving the Pope around in the back seat.

Vehicle is series 3, 2015 vintage. Just fresh from a service, clean oil, etc . So that's slightly above a Prado 120 Series with a 4.0 litre V6 petrol engine which is about 13 litres per 100km extra urban driving.

As per post above, the first quarter of fuel gauge is only about 35 litres.

Trip computer was slightly optimistic with display showing 15.8 litres per 100 km average.

Did another longish drive today, from Sydney to Nowra and then back. Calculated fuel economy has improved significantly - 14.21 litres per 100 kms according to my calculations based on fuel pump number and odometer reading. There was very light showers and external ambient temperatures were down. This time the Patrol was using 95 octane, and I was driving a bit harder instead of feather footing the accelerator pedal like I did only the last couple of days ago. Maybe the trick is to accelerate harder to reach cruising speed.

I have just returned from a 3200km around NSW trip towing a camper trailer (approx 1000kg I reckon and same width as Y62). Mostly did about 90 kph as my son didn't want to go any faster in his 90 series 3.4 Petrol Prado (with roof cage with bunch of stuff on top). I usually got approx 15.5 L/100km and between Dubbo and Cobar I got 12.63 ! , I assume there must have been a nice tailwind on that stretch. I had a headwind across the Hay plain and got 15.6 L/100km. I'm very happy with the fuel economy, it was about 1L/100km better then the Prado (which wasn't towing anything) at each refuel - but that is a 23 year old vehicle with a roof cage and stuff on top (swag etc). So if you cruise along in these vehicles - the economy is impressive. Around the suburbs I average about 16 L/100km but its been as high as 29 L/100km - which was after I got the new exhaust and couldn't help giving the loud pedal a good shove every drive.

My Y62 is a 2020 S5. Has done 13000 km. Only external additions are roadsafe recovery points and a side mirror mounted UHF antenna, so mostly stock in terms of aerodynamics. I used a app to calculate fuel usage and filled the fuel till I could see it in most cases. Tyres were at 39 PSI up front and 47 in the rear (both warm temps confirmed by TPMS and gauge). TPMS saved me when I got a screw in one tyre on a dirt road too.
