I use redline synthetic MT90 pushing close to 700Nm through it and the gearbox temp rarely goes above 100 degrees.
costs about $300 for box and transfer. I'd prefer to pay that if it saves me changing out that beast of a transmission even once.

I think ATF will be too light.

 

ATF is ok but IMO needs changing way to often. And tents to wear stuff quicker.
Mayby alright for a comp truck which only does 500 kms a year but for a Dd. I wouldn't.

 

Add 1ltr. of ATF. at your next oil change. I does inprove gear change.

It must free up the synchroes. Remember ATF. is a high temp. oil, so heat will not be an issue.

 

I personally would stick to a good straight 80 oil.

 

Have been told by a mechainc that he runs ATF in his 100 series too but not sure if I would want to run 100% in a DD but the litre would help i think

 

I am not an oil expert but what i do know is ATF is designed as a hyd oil which will handle high temp but i am not sure it can handle the extreme pressure point loads that a high torque engine can exert on to the gear teeth. The oil has to protect the gear teeth contact point other wise the hard casing on the teeth will wear off, then you get noise and wine etc etc, This is what gear oil is designed for. Sure ATF will make gear changes easy but at the expence of the gear teeth over time i would think you would destroy a gear box eventually.

 

Are gear changes ever going to be a huge issue on a nissan 5 speed behind a td42?

Id just be rejoicing in the strength and reliability of the massive bloody great things.

 

Thanks for the feed back guys. I ended up using Nulon 75W-90 API GL-5. Now I have read a post that says API GL-5 is not good for gear box and should be API GL-4 instead. So now thinking of dumping this oil and changing to GL-4.

 

do it ASAP... GL-5 will wreck the synchros.

Made that mistake myself in the road car. 1st gear synchro is totally stuffed and 2nd is on the way out. Got a spare box in the shed ready to go in.

 

Hi guys i,m usualy a penrite guy all the way but i tried castrol vmx-m & it has improved the shifting in my gearbox of my 2000 gu 5 speed & i use royal purple full synthetic atf oil in the transfer have had no dramas with hard shifting in the gearbox & i am very impressed with the engaging & disengaging of the transfer to.
