Since summer heat is at its worse I thought of installing a rear blower... Inspired by the rear aircon of the BMW X5, here's my DIY version :D

bought this universal type blower assembly :)

I will install this inside the armrest... So I had to cut away the tub inside.

Then I cut a hole at the back side of the armrest

Test fit...

Reinstall the lid and the spacer so I can still put small stuff inside the armrest compartment

Finished product, ready to be installed in the truck!

But I had to wire everything up! i used the OEM rear aircon switch.

Now the armrest assembly is installed!

Rear passengers will now be cooler

Just like the BMW X5!

i removed the switch panel cover so this is where the air will enter. I still need to fabricate a screen type cover for this si it will look better.

Another DIY project done!
Thanks for looking!

Brilliant idea, I've not seen those blowers around before.

How about making some slots low on the sides of the arm rest?
It would draw air from under the seats and the holes would not be visible. No need to make a grille.
As an added bonus it blows farts at the kids in the back.

LOL good point there

brilliant concept though i must say, but as mentioned by sudso, esp living in a country thats hot as hell, the heat wiffs its way through the handbrake guide onto my arms. Ive been always wanting to do something, but in the opposite direction to cool that area down.

You could maybe run some tubing from your a/c vent system under the dash to where this is mounted. There are a lot of cars with these systems in place from factory and you could maybe get some shaped piping from a wreckers to do this if round tubing won't fit very well.

How would something like this go?
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/AIR-CON-HEAT...IANT-/380234268592?cmd=ViewItem&pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5887ba7fb0

All 12v so no need to plug into the factory system. Just need to give some space for intake air. And then the little *&^*&%^&^$% can have cold or hot air.

edit - its not the one I was thinking about this still needs to be plugged into the factory stuff. But I am sure the Jap Import GQ's have 2 heater/coolers plugged into a single Aircon compressor and heater.

Also pretty sure the old L300 Mitsubishi we had, had a 12v aircon mounted under the passenger side dash. Pretty sure there was no compressor for it. It did use alot of power though. If you where sitting still and you turned it on the car would eventually stall with a flat battery.

John,
Where do get there heating and cooling from?
Are they just plumbed air vents from the std under dash set up? Or do they have a seperate system.

I have seen pictures of Safari's with something mounted next to the 3rd row (2nd row in a SWB) seats. And from memory the AC runs of a single compressor, shared with the std under dash cooling.
