2002 DI auto. I have an intermittent problem that is getting more frequent as in every second start. The problem is that at start up the idle revs are about 1000 rpm. ECUTalk shows the water temp at a ridiculous figure of -26 to 0. ICV is at low 20s when normally it is around 40 at start up. This is getting more common over the last 6 weeks. So far I have worked out that if I select drive or reverse and I flick the idle up switch the revs drop to normal? It does not seem to matter if the car is cold or hot.?????? Is it an ECU issue or earth or something els??????

By idle up switch I guess you mean warm up switch? that should automatically disconnect as soon as you engage a gear, that is same for both auto and manual. I would start by checking the simple things first and making sure you have a good earth base, do you have the second strap between gearbox cross member and body?

Did some more watching today. If the ECUTalk water temp is -26 ICV is around 45. I gave seen the water temp down to -44. ICV is about 35. The water temp sometimes slowly counts back up to above +40 and as it increases so does the ICV until it is back to normal. The high idle when it occurs is about 1000 rpm when it is in gear. If I turn the idle up/ warm switch on while in gear the revs drop to about 800.
Is the ICV varying because of inbuilt protection in the ECU?
I have had an unstable water temp for sometime. It would vary between mid 70s and low 90s. I posted about this previously and ECUTalk was updated but made no difference.
No I do not have an additional earth as you asked but have additional earths in the engine bay.

The ecu would adjust the icv% ( which is start of injection timing ) for coolant temp and it would probably be raising the idle revs for the low temp reading to warm the engine up quicker. Hi idle should always go back to normal once in gear unless the NPS is stuffed so that's normal. What does ecutalk show for the TPS voltage at idle, normally around 0.44v I think. Temp sender fault seems the most likely problem.

Did some more checking this morning. at first start this morning the water temp was showing -10 and slowly counting up. I found that if I unplugged the 2 wire temp sensor I had exactly the same thing happening. On inspection the little rubber insert in the back of the plug that holds the connector was allowing the pin to move. I pushed the pin back in and glued the insert in. Since then I have driven over 500 km and no sign of the problem recurring. Temp and ECU are both reading normal.

If the problem comes back put a multimeter on your battery and see if your alternator is charging it.

I had exactly the same issues and it turned out my alternator was cactus. Replaced it with a new one and everything came good.

The ecu didnt like the low voltage much.

hi low idle fluctuations

Good morning all. First off thanks for the add, I'm having a problem and i'm hoping this post shed some light on the situation. i have a 2001 terrano wit a zd30 turbo 4x4 with transmission and it works great but about a month ago after starting on mornings it sometimes idle normal an the suddenly spikes to 900rmp then back down to 700rpm an continues doing this for a wile on some days it idles perfectly and then some days he does play up
it does this in park and even on drive. this problem only seems to calm down by flipping the heat up switch which keep the rev on about 800rpm. is this an electrical or sensor problem?
any assistance given will be greatly appreciated
