Alright for those that are struggling with removing the starter like I was.
The bottom bolt (14mm) came off with a socket no issues
Top right bolt ,this is was more difficult for me
I used a Long ratchet spanner dropped down from the engine bay
Image

Went under the car, reached up the right side of the starter alined the ratchet and slapped the end with a wad of bluetac so it won’t slip off on ya
Returned to the engine bay and slowly ratchet it out ,with the limited room it’ll take a while

Make sure you’ve removed the battery terminal cable and unclipped the plug on the drivers side
The starter should just drop out with a good wiggle from underneath

Are they both 14mm bolts?

Well done, I’ve had two goes at removing my starter and failed twice. My first time I couldn’t undo the bottom bold due to the drive shaft in the way. The second time I tried to remove the drive shaft but couldn’t get the leverage to undo the 4 bolts from underneath even though I jacked up the chassis about 10 inch. Did you have to remove any parts to undo starter bolts?

HI MATE YOU CAN GET AT IT FROM THE TOP. BUT NEED TO DISMANTLE A LOT OF STUFF AND TAKE THE THROTTLE BODY OFF THE INTAKE MANIFOLD , MAY AS WELL DO AN INTAKE MANIFOLD CLEAN. THERE ARE A FEW HOSES YOU CAN REPLACE ,WHILE YOU ARE THERE. ALSO PUT A NEW STARTER MOTOR IN IT. THE TAIL SHAFT BOLTS WILL NEED HEAT. REPLACE THEM WITH NYLOC. NUTS, AND NEW BOLTS. . 85-90 NM 0F TORQUE.

Thanks for the reply Peter, I should have added that I had the starter replaced by the mechanic near my work. I felt it done my head in too much and I really like these mechanics. Only charged me $150 for labour and after I payed and it didn’t fix my cps code fault that I thought was the last possible problem short of ecu damage the fixed that for me for free even after another high end 4x4 mechanic couldn’t work it out.

As for your suggestion I think I’d go this route next time but I do plan on an intake clean after I do catch can and the radiator flush and top egr block or maybe delete I haven’t made my mind up yet.

Lol, my new starter motor arrives Tuesday, 445k on it, still working fine but must be getting close. Yes both are the same size. Wish I had done this when I had the head off, I'm getting old......
Will take some pics.

Starter Motor Change.
For a DI but there ain't much difference really.
Starter motor arrived today, thanks Garry, whole job took 1.25 hours, the blood hasn't started congealing on my hands and arms yet, maybe a few beers will help, it is nearly that time. This is an Hitachi it is exactly the same as the Nissan one because Hitachi make them.

OK so step by step.
1. If your built like Arnie Schwarzenegger get someone else to do it.
2. Disconnect battery and ensure the connections are completely isolated as you will be wriggling around.
3. Unclip EGR connector for more wriggle room.
4. Check the spring loaded hose clips on some of the small hoses down there have their sharp points facing away.
5. Unclip connector between
6. 12mm spanner to remove the power cable to the starter.
7. 14mm swivel head ratchet spanner is great for the top starter bolt, you can only rotate the head a tiny amount. Start on the top bolt otherwise the damn starter will fall out if you not careful (Pic doesn't show 14mm ratchet spanner I finished up using, made it much easier)

8. 14mm bolt underneath is sooooo bloody easy. Hold starter steady wile removing the bolt, then swing the front of the starter down to remove it.

Refitting is simply a reversal of the above.

Along the way.

GU2... if you don't mind, where did you get the starter from and rough price? My starter's playing up and being temperamental so need to look at replacing. Just googled and patrolapart has them for $1658 reduced to $499 which seems a bit questionable

I bought a genuine unit from Garry, considerably cheaper than at a dealer, out of the same factory but not with nissan name. Give him a call.
