Sorry I’m going round in circles reading threads here.

I snapped the spout off my expansion tank. No biggie, it was so yellowed you couldn’t see through it anyway. So I drained the coolant from the bottom radiator bung, saved it (very recently done by mechanic) and replaced the bottle.

I then tried to refill via the radiator. Couldn’t get it all back in. Got some more in via the expansion tank, parked with the nose uphill.

I’ve got maybe 150mL left that came out which I couldn’t get back in. Radiator and expansion both seemed full.

went for a drive with heater on high. got up to 80 degrees on the scangauge, and now I’m parked with the nose pointed uphill again.

questions...
  1. have I done anything wrong so far?
  2. Do I just wait for everything to cool down, then top up the expansion tank again?
  3. Will any air pockets clear themselves automatically when I open the expansion tank?

OK you have done the hard work filling, now comes the fiddly bit. To finish it off now, put vehicle back on level ground, the top tank is higher than the radiator filling point, remove radiator cap and continue to fill top tank, you will see the level rise to the top of the neck when it does refit radiator cap and continue to fill top tank. start engine, I put the heat switch on to get a higher flow, and monitor level at the top tank, you can push some of the air trapped behind the top tank dividers by rapidly squeezing the hose from the radiator to the top tank. Remove as much air as you can and when the level starts to rise due to expansion put the top tank cap back on and go for a drive, on the ZD30 it can take a little while for things to fully settle so you may need to do this a couple of times, see how it goes.

Try and keep away from the expansion tank when hot, not so much for safety (but that is paramount) mainly to let things normalise when cold and get the full picture.

My 2 cents worth.

Sorry I’ve confused myself further.

when you say top tank, do you mean the clear expansion tank or the black top tank of the radiator?

And when you say radiator cap, I assume you mean the the non-pressure cap on the radiator itself, not the cap on the expansion tank. Is that right?

No not up hill now, not necessary, flat and cold is the way forward now.
