I always thought those Caprices looked tough lol but 5liters/100km, that is impressive for a big 8. I wonder if the LS patrol crowd could do similar? Lol I hear most are getting 11mpg or 20liters/100km

The big V8's can get some damn good economy for what they are.
My old man had a VE with an LS3 with a bit of a tune as a work car and he averaged 10.5L/100 on a combined cycle. Could easily get under 10's on a freeway run.

Have any of you ever taken part in an economy run? marvelous what you can achieve if you play with a few constraints. Makes me think of the old adage, believe none of what you hear/read and only half of what you see :).

I bumped into Bruce Garland in Chinchilla a couple of years back. Isuzu were running a comp based on fuel economy. Match the figures that Isuzu get and win a prize, or something like that anyway. Bruce was sponsored by Isuzu, and he was doing the benchmark economy run.

He told me they were picking the route so that they were driving in a flat area with no hills, and changing course if they needed to make sure they weren't driving into a head wind etc. And they drove it at 80 kmh. Hardly real world figures.

Bruce is a nice bloke.

Ed Zackery. And, I had a mate in the 70's with a brand new XY 351GT, he regularly got 28mpg and that was bloody great, but he drove it like a nanny and that is a huge gap to what was being said.

I had a 302 Fairmont wagon and could get 24mpg around town, after getting it Dynoed back in 82. :D

Also had a Datsun 240K sedan that I got 36mpg on a run to Bundy and back but mostly it was 30mpg on average with town and country running. 8)

When I had my ute, nicely tweaked 308, it wasn't driven for economy that was last thing on my mind:)
Fuel is like food if you don't want to get from a to b don't feed it, goes for both engines and people
So have never really given a toss about fuel economy

Same here, you dont buy a V8 for economy. I had a VE SS ute that i got for work towing a trailer. Was a great car but not practical for my type of work. Loved it to bits but in the end i got rid of it and got a Ranger so i could access building sites better.
Love my V8's and still miss owning it but couldnt afford both.
Trying to get the missus to buy a VF V8 wagon for her work duties, which would be nice coz then i still get my fix of 8's...
