but as i can find much info on the 2.8tdi beside the lift pump, does the fuel return mod need to be done on the ve pump on the 2.8, or is the return a tad different to the 3ltr and wont result in fuel in the oil , when doing the lift pump any info asap would be grately appreciated :)

No, not under the plate above the sender, up the back of the rail on the drivers side, about 15cm behind where the rubber hose meets the metal tubing, there is a chassis brace, it's perfect, just drilled 2 holes and bolted it right up there out of the way
Depends though what you are trying to do.

My intention was to include a decent drop out pre-filter that had easy access if required.

No way known my set up would have fitted with easy access.

If it's just a pump there are more options.

There is also plenty if space in behind the right hand side inner guard.

Cheers

Just back from working up in Northern Papua New Guinea, unreliable internet etc so have not been able to get on the forum properly. So here goes at a few replies.

Been following your thread on and off for a while, great info as I have this mod on the to do list, but recently I have just been reading all the blow up threads, just getting an understanding of the issues an $ for repairs, anyway stumbled across the solid flywheel survey & you were more than just vocal about your disgust with it.
From the note above, has this mod fixed the vibration issue with the solid flywheel to your satisfaction, would you go back to a DMF now?
May be relevant to others who have the vibration issues.
I am much happier with the solid flywheel now but it is still way too clunky for my liking but with the vibration completely gone the pain is bearable.
Having said that, when this clutch dies I will be going back to an upgraded DMF.

Still having wet dreams about the increase in low down torque................ absolutely love it.

I really hate to tell you but there is enough room on top of the rail support plate to mount the pump, and its sits right under the rear floor space
Doesn't rain on my parade at all Mat, as indicated at the outset, I spent many hours under the vehicle looking at all the places for the pump to go (including the area you mention) and where I put it suited me the best. If I had to do it again I would put it in exactly the same place, I have good access and visibility coupled with high security.

Are these Carter pumps fully waterproof as in being completely submerged in a river crossing, As in my Avatar??
Mines been through water a few times no problems at all. My mate has literally drowned his atleast a dozen times with no probs.

Id be more concerned about water getting into wiring joins in regards to water than the pump itself.

There is a US Coast Guard version approved for full marine use tho.

Just got your PM this morning, have replied. Mate these Carters are as tough as old boots, I spent a year or so researching pumps here and in the US and even though they have their disadvantages I feel they are far outweighed by the advantages.

I waterproofed the connections at the pump, all other connections are right up at the original fuel filter location, even if the pump does fail you will still have good fuel supply through the bypass (turned mine off many times to test), that is one reason for my decision to stay away from extra filtration and it's high load on the IP, if your careful you really don't need it, a Mr Filter works well in those dodgy places and as said the Carter is tough, good for 10,000 hrs plus. My IP is 12 years old now so I want to look after it.

Thanks for the replies
Is there any concern if the patrol is left on ACC (hence the carter will be pumping fuel) and the engine Not running ....will that extra fuel pressure from the carter cause any problems with the IP?

The Carter is internally regulated so there is no issue with leaving the ignition on.

Have you a picture of your pump mount?? :D:D

thanks geeyoutoo for your research and all your follow up findings.

ive added this to the to do list.

much appreciated mate.

Yeah I will say thanks too GU2! Top effort. Pretty much takes all the mystery out of the lift pump upgrade.

Got me motivated to post up my experience and share mounting options.

Cheers

Update time
Have had the install in for a few months now and have noticed a considerable drop in EGTs for example this morning went for a 20 min drive no load to speak of and was lucky to reach 130 degrees where before pump installation minimum i would see was slightly over 200 degrees.

Any one else seen this change??

Richo17,

Thats very low indeed. Mine idles at 150 C for comparison. Have you noticed any other changes, such as changes to the torque delivery or fuel consumption.

Cheers
