Toughd im looking at turbo install on my 92 gq wagon. Im after good towing power with good fuel economy. Ill have top mount 3 inch straight through zorst ob a top mount manifold. Which of ur td05 would u recommend. I was going to buy gt2860 but reading this has open my eyes. Ill also have snorkle and 33s. Could i get a pm with price on turbo u recommend cheers
Mate a TD05 16G will do all you need if you want to still use just a 10mm pump. Anything else will far out perform the amount of fuel that a 10mm pump can deliver.

I'm also swayed by ALL i have read over the last couple of years, I follow the disco potato threads and read all other info. My choice is now a TD05 as well and I would also be interested to see your personal recommendation for similar driving situations.

What will work for me is boost from 1200rpm through to 2400-2800rpm, standard GQ pump turned up a fraction and boost to about 10-12psi. I'm leaning towards the 18g.

My biggest hassle is finding someone over here who can supply TD05 with 18g in kit form :confused:...otherwise I'll be importing from Aust. Apologies for going off track ;).
OK probably the same again ,16G with STD pump wound up. The TD05"s we supply are not available from any supplier as it is a product we have developed here in WA, they are not "off the shelf" items by any means.

Very interested in changing my turbo aswell.
I've got a 56trim 2871r at the moment and it makes around 190 odd rwkw and 680nm on 25psi.
I recently changed to a 3 1/2" exhaust and different airbox and am suffering from a little compressor surge now.
I have a different intake manifold ready to go on and a bigger intercooler with slightly larger piping.
I just a little worried now that I'm going to bugger up what was a decent little setup with more surge.
I was looking at a td05 map the other day and it seemed very broad, so it may be the go.

Good to hear from you, have you tried taking a little bit of no-boost fuel out of that pump we built when you had it tuned.

What RPM is it surging at ??

What rear housing does that turbo have on it>>
 
Haven't tried anything yet been a bit busy with work.
I'm guessing its surge.Starts to flutter and the boost guage will jump from say 20-30psi.
Does it around 25-2800rpm when you really get up it.
Its only got the little .64 rear on it.
Would pulling the exhaust housing off and machining 1mm out of it help?
I don't really want to slow the rest of the boost down though.

Mate I noticed heaps of difference between the 2. The 16G is definitely a massive improvement over the stock or high flowed factory turbo but the 18G is a big change again. I'm still running stock injector pump, it's just been adjusted to suit my tune and keep EGT's in spec.

Definitely worth doing either I reckon.
where did you notice the difference between the 2 turbo's?low,mid,top?
 
Check out dyno sheet thread on the last page. There is a sheet of my truck with a comparison between the 16 and 18G. No other mods were performed at the time.

See for yourself.

These turbos are sounding pretty good. What sort of intercooling do you recommend? I'm keen to run an ASE front mount to keep things simple.
Yes mate they are coming up with great results as you can see by some of the feedback ! Look I've done all sorts of combos, I try and stick to A2A to keep it simple as you say, I have done a lot off cross-country top mounts , lokndirty (spelling) has a upgraded ARE top mount and that seems to work very well also. Don't like the "off the shelf" W2A they are crap, had a few guys with laminovas and they are awsome , but a nice front mount is also worthy;)
 
There is a heap of information / Testing and actual real life views on these Turbo's and their suitability to a TD42 Obviously with some minor in house touches to improve them further.

I Currently have a Garrett Hybrid on mine and also have brand new built engine that is going to tuners Tomorrow to be Dyno'd. Will see how it's efficiencies come up. But if it's not up to it I'll be selling it and investing in one of these Tickled TD05's..

Nice Work TD and I'm positive the information posted in this thread is a lot more helpful to other TD42 Owners.

I'm told there is no sound ( No whistle ETC) but as for Exhaust sound well that's another things.
 
hey moddedgu ,ive got one of matts meaner setups ,tdo5 plus all the fruit with a crosscountry ultimate top mount .nice and quiet for sainty reasons .makes a sh*t load of power and torque is
is way up there.just came back from MOA park and had a blast performance was way up there and didn't use too much fuel ,quiet surprised. Sorry no vids to busy hanging on.

You guys got the cream of the cake honestly...farkin wish we had the technical input over here that you have, and the cost price...i'd have a united tdo5 well and truly installed by now.

of course performance is integral, but a nice note makes it all the more sweeter when your behind the wheel:D

this was the "smaller" one making about 20 psi. high flowed turbine and some compressor mods for better flow.
we hit about 160kph@ wheels with this which is about 140kph across the ground on GPS.

the latest version is making 29psi with a bigger compressor. just about runs off the clock.
Launches hard.. the black patrol on the start line in this vid at 2 minutes 55 seconds.

you can hear a bit of whistle through the Metallica -not the short 3 inch exhaust no muffler. Speed over ground was up to 164kph, but the wind resistance at that speed is huge, we were doing nearly 40kph wheelspin. Note how quick the smoke clears up. The turbo spools up fast.

got some footage coming with no music recorded with a decent camera (thanks to the 4wd show) and I'll put it up when I get it.

If you want big whistles and huffing and puffing buy something else, you might also consider trading your patrol in on a silvia with fooly sick BOV. These end up sounding like an NA petrol 6 with a reasonable exhaust with a faint whistle.

Hey twodiffs, Here here! I am in total agreeance with you. I to wish we had access to their technical input and know how.
Great Bloke Matt is very helpful and easy to talk with on TD42 issues (whatever they are).

Hi Tough Diesels,

I just came across this thread it is fascinating. I am planning to add a turbo to my naturally aspirated TD42 (1989 Safari) and already have a new HKS 2530 (basically a fortified GT2860RS) in a box (I got it dirt cheap by bartering with a skyline builder/tuner). As yet, I have not acquired an exhaust manifold or the other parts needed for the project.

You had mentioned that the efficiency of the internal wastegate of the 2860 could be a factor in the climbing EGTs during it's continuous run. If I do use this turbo, would it be worthwhile to fix the internal wastegate shut and go with an external wastegate such as a 38mm Tial? Do you think that could resolve the issue of the creeping EGTs during a continuous run?
