Qantas are grounding some services and shorty after this they will retrench a lot of employees, hopefully not too many get rolled that were not involved in not going to work.

Anyone remember when Margaret Thatcher did this in 1982 in England. I was there then and basically told the train driver to stop their strike and turn up for work Monday or look for another job, surprise surprise they all came back to work.

Not quite. Qantas is an organisation that has worked hard over the twenty or so years I've been working around airports to embitter it's workforce. Of all the blokes I know they'd rather just get on with their jobs and be treated with a bit of respect.

I hope the top 100 Qantas managers give themselves another big payrise and then fcuk off to Myanmar or north Korea and run airlines there. Their management style would go down well over there.

 

I'm not a union guy i think they mostly cause way more trouble than there worth. But it is good to be able to stand up for yourself. I know they can be a greedy bunch but i think its abit rich the Qantas CEO gets a 71% rise in his package and then says No to everyone else.

The way i see it is either way this goes Qantas is basically rooted. Either they move all there maintenance and services offshore to remain competative with the "budget" carriers or keep it here and operating costs will be huge forcing ticket prices through the roof. Lets be honest when i book a ticket to fly i pretty much fly with whos the cheapest which is never Qantas. i think most normal australians would be in same boat.

 

Just saw the queen on the news boarding a Qantas flight in Perth what are you lot on about no hold up for her.

So it is ok for a CEO to call the shots but for employees to ask for wages to keep up with then CPI that is wrong. How come a CEO who closes sites and sacks workers he is ok but for unionists and workers to protest against it (which used to be a democratic right ) it is wrong?

Allan Joyce in the last 3 years has taken over a 50% paycut because of failing profit margings,
if the company is now doing well, and recording huge gains in profit margins, the CEO deserves a pay increase! the end of the day, the buck starts and stops with him..


i dont understand these piolits, engeneer's etc.. they need to be thankful that they have a job, there are ALOT of people out there, that are capable of working, and would love to work, but there is just no positions out there for them.. im pretty sure, they would be thankful to be in a position and earning some income and not winging and biitching about how much they are getting...

I agree with Joyce, we need to keep up with the times, newer aircraft, newer procedures, newer technology, we are in a technology hugry world, its not going to be Joyce that brings this iconic company into the ground, it will be the unions, not allowing the company to change, to grow and adapt with the this day and ages world.


and ill cop some backlash here, the state and federal goverments need to shut there farking mouths, what right do they think they have to try and make rulings over a company? duh, isnt that why the compnay has a CEO, management teams etc etc?

As a result of widespread industrial action, Qantas has announced it will ground its entire domestic and international fleet immediately and until further notice.

Importantly, there will be NO disruptions to AaE’s freighter operations, however, AaE customers will experience some delays until Qantas operations return to normal.
Contingency plans are being implemented to help minimise disruption to our customers and we will continue to provide updates as they arise.

The pilots weren't actually conducting any action apart from the silly announcements about not wanting foreign pilots to piloy domestic flights.
What happens once qantas has outsourced all it's servicing ect overseas? They'll make more money and perhaps prices will fall but it will also mean less money being spent in Aus by qantas workers as less of them will be Aussies.

I think its piss poor considering revenue is approx $15bn.

When you can get 5+ % in a bank term deposit and 1.3% on qantas shares who would you choose?

new facilities are not cheap.
maintenance is not cheap.
business growth is not cheap.
etc etc etc...

200m+ profit, thats miniscule to a company that size!

thats like a car yard selling 10 cars a week! there 'profit' does not go back to there employess! and it sure as hell doesnt go to the boss!

The Pilots and Engineers are concerned their jobs are going to be shifted into offshore resources which are cheaper and therefore more favourable for the business to employ from a financial perspective.

Saw a quote from Albanese this morning re Qantas holding the public to ransom, does he say that when strikes coincide with school holidays etc.......

I bet the result is differant if the same survey was done today.
